to the pianist

Must read

By Jordan Birkner

art forms existed long before we did
we have our duty as artists to practice them
but no one can ever truly be a master

we have our passion that drives us
It can be seen in our art
and to neglect it is foolish of us

we know it drives us, it means so much more than the monotonous cycles of life, this is so much deeper within us
we are artists

we've had a calling for so long yet it's not conventional or reliable to devote ourselves to it
but over the years you so rarely hear about the mathematicians, the names of the scientists
you hear about the musicians, the architects, because their work transcends the immediate monetary needs

we're driven to the bigger picture, the energies of life
cultures dance, they sing, art preserved in tombs and statues
to nurture and pass on this knowledge to our young, not a trivial education

never abandon your art
the keys allow you to express yourself. no other instrument allows you such versatility, such layering and blending, with such reliability and elegance as the piano

what an amazing, timeless concept
immortalized within its own time, refusal to truly be replaced or forgotten despite all of the attempts
the power when within a single, chilling note

the instrument is an animal, such cacophonous potential
and the pianist, in a constant war with the resistance of the keys to create what the rest of us can only attempt to process
we could never fully share in your journey, in your experience

but your art is important, do not continue to allow it to be neglected
knowing how to play piano is not that difficult, but the ability to play it is truly another story
i can feel its power but I know I was never meant to harness it
it is your responsibility to maintain it for us
