Sept. 16: Kapila Vatsyayan, renowned art historian and expert of Indian classical dance passed away in her Delhi home on Wednesday. She was 91.
Dr. Vatsyayan was the Chairperson of the Asia Project at the Indian International Centre (IIC), and Founder Director of Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. She had keep interest in Nepal as well and had visited Nepal may times, especially to attend conferneces on folklore or as external supervisor to several researches taking place in Nepalese universities.
Dr. Vatsyayan also served as a member of parliament and bureaucrat in India. In 1970, Vatsyayan received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, the highest honor conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s national academy for music, dance and drama. In 2011, the Government of India bestowed upon her the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honor.
Some of her famous works are Jaur Gita-Govinda: a dated sixteenth century Gita-Govinda from Mewar, Dance Sculpture in Sarangapani Temple, Traditions of Indian Folk Dance, Concepts of Space: Ancient and Modern, Â Indian Classical Dance, Art, the Integral Vision: A Volume of Essay in Felicitation of Kapila Vatsyayan.
