Octogenarian writer and journalist Nagendra Raj Sharma was felicitated amidst a grand public event in Kathmandu in recognition of his contribution to Nepali literature and literary journalism. In a grand event held at the auditorium of Nepal Academy on Sunday, Mr. Sharma was felicitated by Satya Mohan Joshi, veteran cultural expert and writer, who attended the event as Chief Guest. The event started with a ride given to Mr. Sharma, accompanied by panche baja, traditional Nepali band, making circles around the hall of Nepal Academy, Kamaladi.
In the event chaired by central felicitation committee chair Pawan Aalok, member Bidhan welcomed the guests and stressed on the need of establishing Nagendra Raj Sharma Journalism Award. Chairperson Aalok offered vermillion and bouquet to the honored personage, who attended the event together with his wife. Aalok also honored the couple with ceremonial shawl and garlands of cynodone. Senior writer Rama Sharma, guest of the event, offered Nepali cap to Mr. Sharma as a mark of honor.
In the event, Chief Guest Satya Mohan Joshi offered to Mr. Sharma a life-size citation in bronze. About fifty different organizations from all over the nation also conferred on him their letters of felicitation.
On the occasion, a book Nagendra Raj Sharma Samagra Grantha was launched. Edited by Roshan Thapa Neerab, the work is a combination of four of Mr. Sharma’s works. Abhivyakti Yayavar a collection of Sharma’s essays published over the years in Abhivyakti, a literary journal he edits. A commemorative book, Narash Sanshipta Jeevani prepared by Govinda Giri Prerana was also distributed on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Mr. Joshi unfolded the myth and belief behind the ritual of celebrating the eighty-fourth birthday in Nepali community. Mr. Sharma said, he was honored to have been privileged to work with four generations of Nepali writers and literary journalists.
