INS Observes International Women’s Day

The Women’s Committee of the International Nepali Society, in collaboration with International Nepal Contemplation Centre, organized a virtual symposium to observe the 111th International Women’s Day on Monday. Chaired by writer and human rights activist Dr. Renuka Solu, the event featured both Nepali and foreign speakers, who are seasoned experts of gender rights and equality. Prominent guests attending the virtual event were former dean of Kathmandu University Prof. Dr. Tankanath Sharma, Prof. Dr. Sushan Acharya, Prof. Dr. Shreeram Prasad Upadhyaya, Prof. Dr. Bindu Pokharel, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bhagawati Upadhyaya, Prof. Dr. Laxmi Gyawali, Prof. Dr. Motilal Ghimire, critic and analyst Prof. Dr. Bishnu Karki, Dr. Puspalal Damai, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Narayan Gaire, linguist Dr. Taramani Rai, Dr. Bhupal Pandey, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pushpa Ghimire, critic and poet Mahesh Paudyal, Namrata Sharma, Shanta Laxmi Shrestha, Dr. Januka Poudel and others. The experts, who spoke on various dimensions of women’s rights and gender equality were Najbul Khan, Urmila Nirdoshi, Bina Theeng Tamang, Katy Nirvana, Rachel Brown, Dr. Ryane Vaibair, and a few creative writers. The speakers stressed on the need to educate both the genders on factors that limit their rights, and underscored the need to explore avenues where collaborate efforts can lead to the development of better societies. Speaking on the occasion, Chair Dr. Renuka Solu observed that without giving ample opportunities and representation to the women who constitute more than half of the total population of the world, the fair society we have imagined won’t be possible.

INS Chair Arjun Ghimire expressed commitments on behalf of his organization to work tirelessly for women’s welfare and advocate for their rights. He also informed the participants that in the near future, the organization would organize a virtual conference on the global scale on language and literature.

The event that drew participation from across the world was hosted by Neetu Khatiwada, Supriya Basnet Ghimire, Diksha Bhandari and Kusum Gurung.
